As Winter Storm Hercules continues to pummel New England with icy snow and frigid winds, Mayor-elect Marty Walsh announced that inaugural community service events scheduled for the morning of Friday, January 3, have been postponed. As of now, however, events slated to take place after 4:00 p.m. are still on the books.

If nothing else, the first nor’easter of 2014 has inspired the Mayor-elect to ramp up his neighborhood efforts to keep them clear and safe. According to an email dispatched by Mayor-elect Walsh, the winter storm “provides us with an opportunity to once again demonstrate the strong fabric of our community. A winter storm like the one hitting our city calls for us as individuals to redouble our efforts to serve our neighborhoods.”

The Walsh camp had at least eight service initiatives on the agenda for Friday, spanning nearly every single Boston neighborhood, though because they had yet to determine a firm time for each, it’s unclear at this point which will still take place after 4:00 p.m..

Perhaps one of the more anticipated events that has yet to be formally announced by the Mayor-elect, spokespeople from his campaign, or inauguration committee is that Chris Herren is expected to speak at an event sponsored by the committee at the North End’s Nazzaro Community Center.

According to the local blog North End Waterfront, Herren will descend upon the Nazzaro Center at 7:00 p.m. and all are welcome to attend. Herren is a former high school and college standout basketball player hailing from Fall River, Mass. During nearly his entire high school, collegiate, and professional career Herren suffered from drug and alcohol addictions that eventually led to multiple stints in rehab, but subsequent years of sobriety and public service of his own.

Herren was also the subject of an ESPN documentary which detailed the struggles of his addictions and how he overcame them as part of its ’30 for 30′ series.

BostInno reached out to Mayor-elect Walsh’s press secretary for a comment on details surrounding the event, but have yet to hear anything back. It seems that currently weather will not be a factor in possibly deterring the committee from hosting the event.
