As we marvel at the mountainous snow accumulation totals from the comforts of our warm homes due to Winter Storm Hercules, hot toddy in hand, it’s important to realize if you plan on heading out that Boston is expected to challenge record cold temperatures Friday.

Though snowflakes are expected to cease flurrying in the early afternoon, temperatures will be close to freezing almost all day. According to CBS Boston meteorologis Terry Elisasen, high temperatures will unlikely surpass 10 to 15 degrees during the height of the day and wind chills will only make it worse. Adding to the frigidity will be that these tumultuously low temps are expected to spill into Saturday.

Writes Elisasen, “We will challenge many record lows on Saturday morning (-4 in Boston) as just about all of southern New England will fall below zero for the first time in a couple years.”

According to their graphics, wind chills are going to pull those temps down to an unfathomable negative 16 degrees in The Hub.

It seems as if we’re not catching any breaks in the new year of 2014. With temps taking a nosedive all day and snow accumulation totals north of Boston having already lapped two feet (14 inches in Boston), one has to wonder what else Mother Nature has in store for us.

The answer? Rain.

Continues Eliasen, “Believe it or not, we may be talking about rain by Sunday night.  The atmosphere will make a quick recovery on Sunday and our next storm on Sunday night and Monday will fall mainly as rain, with perhaps a bit of an icy mix well to the north and west.”

So there you have it, Boston. We’re experiencing nearly all facets of that notoriously fickle New England weather. But as we’re all hunkering down in the comforts of our living spaces, be sure to check out all of our coverage to make the most and the best out of Winter Storm Hercules.
