After my middle school days, I swore off blue eye shadow. I had a heavy hand with my makeup brush and it just wasn’t doing me any favors. But now, blue shadow is making a triumphant comeback after being featured in both the Fall and Spring Fashion Weeks – and this time around, I’m determined to wear it right.

The first trick I’ve learned is to always keep the rest of your look simple. Blue is a bold hue, so let it take center stage and pair it with fresh-faced makeup.

Also important? Making sure you have the right blue shade for your skin tone. If you’re not sure which shadow suits your complexion best, simply check out this mini guide:

For Fair Skin Tones
Choose a shade that won’t overpower your complexion, like a cool periwinkle or a shadow with silver undertones. I personally love Estée Lauder Pure Color Eye Shadow in “Winking Periwinkle.”

For Medium Skin Tones
Go for a bold look with a turquoise hue. This tutorial will show you how.

For Dark Skin Tones
Look to shades of cobalt or midnight blue. Try NARS Matte Shadow in “Outremer.”

Still unconvinced? Ease into it the trend with a bit of blue eyeliner.
