As I wandered across the channel to Fort Point this weekend, I was reminded once again just how close the neighborhood actually is – despite its slight isolation from the rest of the city. Walking the neighborhood streets on Sunday revealed many of the neighborhood’s charms – filled with artists, craft breweries, and of course, some of the best libations and food in town.

With the recent influx of restaurants, there’s no denying that the Fort Point neighborhood has quickly turned into a foodie’s paradise, but don’t forget, it all started with Barbara Lynch’s Sportello.

Located on Congress Street, the restaurant continues to innovate, recently updating their menu and modern decor. Sportello, Italian for “counter service,” looks and feels exactly how it is described – as a “modern interpretation of classic diner.” The inside is lined with sleek counter tops yet the entire restaurant is both bright and cheery. Whatever mood you’re in, you’ll instantly feel lifted just by walking through the door – guaranteed.

As for my lunch, that was a tough decision. Every Italian-style dish on the menu sounded perfect. But I ended up going with their roasted chicken breast served on a bed of warm fregola salad, kale and feta. Normally I find chicken to be pretty bland – but not at Sportello. Their chicken was perfectly cooked, succulent and not the least bit dry. And the salad underneath was the perfect accompaniment.

In addition, I tried some of their “snacks” (below) listed on the lunch menu including duck liver crostini and smoked potato and salsa calabrese. As you might have gathered from the descriptions, these “snacks” were more like “fancy snacks” – both of which I could have mindlessly snacked on all day.

Everything was utterly delicious – and I’m now thoroughly looking forward to my next (not-so-far) trip across the Channel.
