The Oscar race officially commenced this morning, with Chris Hemsworth (swoon) and Academy President Cheryl Boone Isaacs announcing the nominations. And, like every year, there were plenty of snubs and surprises. Let’s discuss.

No Tom Hanks. And here I thought he was a sure thing for a Best Actor nom. I mean, Captain Phillips? Saving Mr. Banks? He had not one, but two chances.

But Leo is in the running. Yes, I know – he won the Golden Globe and that usually means a shoo-in. But remember, just last year he was snubbed for his role in Django. And before that for The Departed. He’s also never won a statuette. But who knows? Maybe 2014 is his lucky year.

Jonah Hill got a nom, too. Which, okay, wasn’t that surprising. But here’s the thing: this is his second nomination in three years. And, well, I just can’t get over the fact that the kid from Superbad is most likely going to be one of the greatest actors of our generation. Who would have thought?

Everyone in American Hustle was nominated. Well, just about. And while it was expected that Jennifer Lawrence and Amy Adams would each get a nom, Bradley Cooper and Christian Bale were touch and go there for a while.

But there was no love for Emma Thompson. And that’s like saying you hate Mary Poppins – just plain unacceptable.
