Though he may not boast the same kind of name recognition as fellow gubernatorial challenger Charlie Baker and Martha Coakley, Democratic candidate Don Berwick pulled down his second endorsement in the early stages of the race Thursday. Strengthening his position as the hopeful with the ability to reform healthcare in Massachusetts was Mass-Care, the commonwealth’s largest advocacy group devoted to single payer healthcare reform.

“Rising healthcare costs are crippling the economy in Massachusetts, hurting families, and hindering clinicians,” said Ture Turnbull, Executive Director of Mass-Care in a statement. “Dr. Berwick understands this, and I’m pleased to announce Mass-Care’s endorsement of his candidacy.”

Just last week Berwick received the endorsement of state Senator Sonia Chang-Díaz, noting that his background in healthcare and his leadership qualities have afforded him the opportunity to explore different social and economic institutions. Such ample opportunity has subsequently allowed him to view different issues from an outsider’s perspective, not the same tired point of view as candidates bred for the political arena.

“Don has spent his career advocating for the public, finding practical solutions to big-scale problems, and fighting for underserved communities,” said Sen. Chang-Díaz. Chang-Díaz continued:

His passion, vision, and willingness to stand up for what is right will make a difference in people’s lives—as, indeed, it literally already has. From fighting to preserve adequate resources for our schools, to ensuring that every worker in our Commonwealth can earn a living wage, to taking aggressive steps to reform our corrections system, to protecting our environment for future generations, to ending homelessness for our veterans, Don has put forward a bold, progressive agenda. I am proud to offer him my support.

They’re respectable endorsements for Berwick in that one bolsters his already sterling reputation as a healthcare executive, while the other lends credence to his abilities over a multitude of Massachusetts’s multifaceted socioeconomics, allowing him to keep from being pigeonholed as ‘the healthcare candidate.’
