We all start the year off with the very best of intentions. Eat healthier food. Drink less wine. Hit the gym. And now that the first month of 2014 is coming to a close, let’s ask – how is that going for you? If you haven’t been able to put in your time on the treadmill or yoga mat, here are a few tips to help you make it happen.

  1. Download new music for your workout playlist the night before. You’ll wake up feeling amped and excited to listen to it. For some inspiration, check out the top picks for January 2014 according to Run Hundred. (I’m partial to “Happy” by Pharrell Williams. If anything can make me smile on the treadmill, it’s that song.)
  2. Familiarize yourself with other people at the gym to make it feel like you’re all in the fitness game together. You don’t have to actually be besties, but aim for friendly. Make eye contact, smile, say hello. Introduce yourself.
  3. Make yourself accountable. Sign up for a class that will charge you a fee if you miss it, or set up time with a trainer – which, according to FitSugar, also comes with a whole slew of other benefits. Like actually learning how to do exercises properly.
  4. Join a challenge. If your coworkers are clocking in over 10,000 steps a day, so are you. Get yourself an activity tracker like a Fitbit, which starts you off with a 10K-step-per-day goal, and get started. The spirit of competition will keep you going.
