Mayor Marty Walsh was sworn in on January 6, meaning, of course, that it was time for his chief of staff to assume his official duties.

Daniel Arrigg Koh – that’s @dank, on Twitter  – was a former advisor under Tom Menino, HuffPost Live’s general manager, and Arianna Huffington’s chief of staff. Arguably, what’s intrigued people the most about Koh, is his age –he’s only 29-years-old.

Despite holding two Harvard degrees, and boasting a particularly on-point Twitter game, Koh, a native of Andover, hasn’t been able escape questions surrounding his appointment to chief of staff of the Walsh Administration.

Over the weekend, Koh joined WGBH “Under The Radar” host Callie Crossley for a 15-minute radio segment. During the interview, Koh shed light on his hiring and discussed day-to-day chief of staff duties.

“It was a crazy story,” Koh said, alluding to his hiring.

Mitch Weiss, the chief of staff to Menino, Koh said, reached out regarding Walsh’s search to fill the vacant position.

“I missed Boston,” Koh said. “I knew at some capacity I wanted to come back. [Weiss] mentioned to me that he had spoken to the mayor and that he was still thinking about options for chief of staff.”

The process, Koh said, started with a “shot in the dark email” – which turned into a phone call, and eventually, an in-person meeting. Now, “Here I am,” Koh said.

In love with Boston’s people, culture and potential, Koh said, he’s going to try to persuade some of his New York friends – and anybody else – to migrate to Boston in the coming years.

The jobs here, Koh believes, are better.

When asked about his chief of staff responsibilities, Koh didn’t downplay his two main roles: “Advise the mayor on decisions he’s about to make,” and “Executing” the tasks at hand.

Don’t expect Koh to be a hard ass while on the job. Taking a negative, degrading approach with employees, Koh said, “just causes strife and back talking.”

“When you engage somebody” – in a positive way – “you make them feel like they’re in the loop and feel valued,” Koh said. However, should a situation call for it – there’s bound to be plenty of those times – he’s “not afraid to get tough.”

While admitting that he’s confident in his abilities, Koh acknowledged his inexperience.

“It would be arrogant to say that I’m going in here knowing everything, that everything will be perfect,” he said, adding that working close with Joyce Linehan, Walsh’s publicist, has – and will continue to be – a huge asset.

Koh’s tech-savviness will be on display as long as Walsh is at the helm. Behind the scenes, he said, Walsh and Co. are working on engaging the public – via social media, blogs and video – in unique ways.

Before the radio interview came to a close, Koh was asked to touch on his race – a question he took in stride.

“People look at me and squint,” Koh said. “I’ve gotten that my entire life. I’m not to worried about it.”

Koh is Korean and Lebanese. Heritages, he said, he’s very proud of.
