Arby’s got lucky last night. It’s not every day an award-winning singer dresses in a spitting image of your own logo.

But despite roast-beef-and-curly-fry similarities, Williams’s Arby’s-esque hat – a cartoonish park ranger-style thing which now has its own Twitter account – isn’t just crazy. There’s history behind it. According to Esquire, the Vivienne Westwood–designed hat is called a “Campaign” hat and has been around since the 1840s. In 1911, it was made the official hat of the U.S. Army. After Westwood debuted the hats in 1982, early hip-hop group The World’s Famous Supreme Team wore them often. As New York Magazine so maturely concludes, Williams could have simply been nodding to the early days of hip-hop.

Regardless, it’s funny. And 2014?s easiest Halloween costume has just been identified.
