The no-brainer of the century: the MBTA is one of the best public transportation systems in the country.

Walk Score released today its new “Best U.S. Cities for Public Transportation” rankings. And – honestly, everyone saw this coming – Boston took home the Bronze.

“[Walk Score] calculated the Transit Score for 316 cities and almost 7,000 neighborhoods to help home shoppers and apartment hunters find places to live with better commutes and more transportation choices,” writes Matt Lerner in a blog post.

With a “Transit Score” of 75, Boston finished third behind Gold Medal winner New York (81), and Silver Medal recipient San Francisco (80). Washington D.C. and Philadelphia rounded out the top five, finishing fourth and fifth, respectively.

“The older Northeast cities with established subway systems have the highest scores,” continued Lerner, adding that “West Coast cities that have made more recent investments in light rail also score well.”

The South put on a poor showing, its states averaging a mere 38 on the TS scale.
