Ironically, today February 5, is officially National Weatherperson’s Day. How appropriate!

As Winter Storm Nika buries the City of Boston and begins piling up outside of our homes and offices, it only makes sense that we celebrate the men and women who brought us news of this storm in the first place. After all, without a weather forecast, how would we know what to wear or what to expect on our daily commute?

We wouldn’t. Which is why weather forecasters, normally taken for granted, deserve recognition for staying up late to track the weather, braving the storm’s frontlines and keeping us safe – one weather report at a time.

National Weatherperson’s Day was started in commemoration of the birth of John Jeffries in 1744. According to the National Weather Service, Jeffries was one of “America’s first weather observers” and began taking daily weather observations in Boston in 1774. Yes, Boston’s weather was so bad that it pretty much invented the field of meteorology (sort of). You’re welcome.

And in honor of some of the Hub’s local weather forecasters, here’s a video (below) of NECN’s latest weather forecast  – Stay warm (and dry) out there, folks!
