Registration is now open for Project Bread’s 46th annual Walk For Hunger event happening Sunday, May 4, 2014. You better have your walking shoes ready because this isn’t any walk in the park. No, you will be covering serious Boston ground – 20 miles, starting and ending at the Boston Common.

Over 40,000 people are expected to participate, all walking with one goal in mind: to raise money and awareness about the issues of hunger here in Massachusetts. The event is expected to raise an impressive $3.5 million for the cause.

And according to a press release, the funds will support “local food pantries, community-based meal programs, early childhood and school nutrition initiatives.” A portion will also help improve access to farm-to-table resources.

Last November, Project Bread released the 2013 Status Report on Hunger, which revealed more than 700,000 people in the state weren’t “sure where their next meal will come from… 80% higher than it was at the beginning of the last decade,” according to a press release.

The 20-mile Walk for Hunger will cover Boston, Brookline, Newton, Watertown and Cambridge. Phew. But there will be entertainment and water stops along the way.

If you’d like to sign up (and why wouldn’t you?), you can register to walk, volunteer, and/or donate at www.projectbread.org/walk. More information is also available by calling 617-723-5000.
