It’s no secret that Charlie Baker is a savvy manager with plenty of political wherewithal sprinkled in. But if you didn’t happen to know that, Charlie is more than willing to tell you. The Baker gubernatorial campaign released a new video Thursday highlighting the Republican candidate’s turnaround of Harvard Pilgrim Healthcare.

According to Baker’s press office, at the helm of Harvard Pilgrim the Needham-native ignited a slew of initiatives that brought the company from “receivership to the number one health insurance provider in the nation in customer service and member satisfaction.”

The video is surely intended exemplify how Baker can pull Massachusetts from the throes of economic recession, create jobs and maintain the Bay State’s position as a national leader in innovation.

But perhaps what’s most refreshing about video is that it doesn’t explicitly mention the race for Governor of Massachusetts until the final 17 seconds of the five-minute clip. He doesn’t bash the Democratic party or Governor Deval Patrick and he doesn’t tout just himself. Rather, he conveys the Harvard Pilgrim success story as a team effort, albeit under his tutelage.

I’m not saying this is the most selfless campaign video ever to be broadcast over YouTube. On the contrary, the ultimate message is as self-serving as gubernatorial ads come.

What I respect most about Baker’s new video is that he’s sheathing his political sword if only for just five-minutes to try and plainly explain, in the way politicians and legislative hopefuls really ought to, why he considers himself best for the job.
