St. Patrick’s Day weekend is underway, Boston. While green waves of pedestrians trekked from one Irish pub to the other, Mayor Marty Walsh and Republican gubernatorial candidate Charlie Baker enjoyed the Shamrock Shootout in West Roxbury.

The annual neighborhood street hockey tournament is just the first of a plethora of St. Patrick’s Day jubilations in Boston. Tomorrow will be the yearly South Boston parade, though with less sponsors than initially anticipated, and the political breakfast and roast. The parade is slated to kick off at 11 a.m.

According to NECN, the Shamrock Shootout brings together the community by getting 600 children together to play street hockey.

“It’s a beautiful day so far, so it’s like the unofficial kick off of spring,” the mayor told NECN.

Despite the controversy and animosity surrounding the parade, it’s been a city staple for over 100 years. Mayor Walsh has indicated that he will not march in the parade due to its continued history of essentially excluding LGBT advocates from also marching.

Baker previously addressed the Nashoba Valley Chamber of Commerce on Friday and later traveled to Lawrence to take part in the annual St. Patrick’s Day Luncheon.
