Here in Boston, we’re a hub for some of the nation’s best colleges and universities. But when it comes to our local school mascots, we could do better. And with March Madness upon us, we thought it was only necessary to bring back two of the worst local examples of school spirit – both from UMass Amherst and Harvard University.

The mascots – Harvard University’s John Harvard and UMass Amherst’s Sam the Minuteman – have been around for quite a while. And while their modern-day counterparts are probably less disturbing, it doesn’t change the fact that the vintage mascots scared small children, everywhere.

Don’t get us wrong – we’re glad both teams made it into the March Madness competition. But it doesn’t change (or remove) this creepy factor above (make it go away!).

So, which local college mascot is actually more terrifying? Good question.

Sam the Minuteman could desperately use a pair of tweezers. But John Harvard’s face would scare even the real John Harvard, himself. We’re still trying to figure out what exactly is going on there.

Vote above and let us know which one is truly the creepiest Massachusetts mascot to enter March Madness this year.
