When I caught word that Matthew McConaughey wouldn’t be returning for season two of True Detective, I have to admit, I panicked. However, considering the HBO show is an anthology and with each season the cast and theme changes, I should have been prepared to see McConaughey go. As for his replacement? It looks like the show might enlist the one and only Brad Pitt. But, to be honest, that’s not really easing my anguish. Or anyone else’s, it seems.

Let’s take GQ, for example. In a piece written yesterday, the magazine speaks out against the rumor. Is Brad Pitt too big a name to switch to the TV screen, they ask? Although Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson are also incredible actors (True Detective is proof), Pitt’s superstardom is in a world of its own.

The bigger question, too, is whether casting mega actors in TV roles eliminates opportunities for lesser-knowns who might come into their own through a cable gig. Take Jon Hamm, James Gandolfini, and Bryan Cranston, for example.

Personally, I’d be happy to have Pitt’s handsome face on-screen more frequently, though I’m uncertain if this is where I’d like to see him make his HBO debut. But I guess we’ll all have to test our patience, deal with our panics, and wait and see.
