Local online learning platform edX announced Monday it has a new president and chief operating officer: former Vistaprint COO Wendy Cebula.

In a statement posted on its website Monday, edX said that current President Anant Agarwal will become CEO while Cebula will be taking over the day-to-day management and will generally oversee all of edX’s operations.

Said Agarwal in the release, “Wendy … has a proven track record for enabling growth and driving operational excellence, and she is experienced in running large online businesses.”

Agarwal has been president since edX’s inception in 2012 and is also a professor of electrical engineering and computer science at MIT. He heads the Institute’s Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory.

Cebula had a 13-year tenure as an executive at Vistaprint, an online supplier of marketing and promotional materials to small businesses and individuals. While COO, she helped oversee the company’s growth from a revenue of $1 million to more than $1 billion around the world. Cebula is currently on the board of directors for ResearchNow, a market research company, and is a business advisor for Gemvara.

edX offers more than 150 free courses from the world’s leading universities, including Berklee College of Music and Boston University locally. In February, edX launched an interactive data visualization map to chart in real-time the platform’s enrollment numbers, total certificate acquisitions, age/gender composition, most popular courses and more.

Cebula expressed excitement at being at the helm of the world’s leader in online higher education initiatives. She said, “Innovation in education shows no sign of slowing, and I’m excited to be part of this movement and part of an organization that is literally changing the face of education for whole nations, businesses and universities.”
