With its honest-to-goodness products, apothecary-style retail stores, and clinically clean packaging, Kiehl’s has long been loved for its fuss-free approach to skincare. And that’s exactly why I was surprised – and intrigued – to learn that the company will break into the beauty business in July with the release of a glossy black nail polish.

My first thought: Really? If a company like Kiehl’s, which has found huge success in a singular sector, is rolling out a basic beauty product like nail polish, it must be special. Turns out, it is. Proceeds from the polish’s sales will benefit AmfAR in the organization’s fight against AIDS.

My second thought: But, black? Yes, and it makes sense. Legions of Kiehl’s fans already know that the company’s founding family members had a soft spot for motorcycles, a theme seen in its stores’ décor and in LifeRide, a nine-day motorcycle ride that raises funds for amfAR. So, biker-approved black it is. The polish will begin shipping in July, just as the fourth-annual LifeRide hits the road in Seattle.
