Vince Wilfork never wanted to leave the Patriots, and now it looks like his wish has come true. According to mutliple sources, Wilfork has restructured his contract with New England, meaning that his salary cap number comes down, alleviating the growing concerns that the Patriots had in that department. Here’s the tweet from ESPN’s Adam Schefter essentially breaking the news about Wilfork restructuring with the Patriots:

It will most likely be overwhelmingly praised around New England, since the tough defensive tackle is a fan favorite. More than that, it’s another step in the right direction for the Patriots in the offseason, filled so far with what are being viewed as positive decisions taken by Bill Belichick and the front office. Wilfork later put this on Instagram, finally telling his side of the story:

Wilfork, who missed much of last season with a ruptured Achilles, now walks back into a Patriots defense that is considerably improved from the one he left in the early-season game against the Falcons in 2013. Darrelle Revis is now on the roster, as is Brandon Browner.

The addition of two primetime defensive backs, coupled with the return of Wilfork and Patriots middle linebacker Jerod Mayo (who also was hurt for the season last year), will mean both improvements in the passing defense, and run defense. Optimism has been on the rise in New England, and this will only send it further in that direction (deservedly so).
