On Friday afternoon, Mayor Marty Walsh will hold a vigil in remembrance of Boston firefighters Lt. Ed Walsh and Michael Kennedy who died battling the infamous 9-alarm fire at 298 Beacon Street on Wednesday.

According to the mayor’s office, he will be raising the flag of the Boston Fire Department over City Hall Plaza and observing a moment of silence in honor of Lt. Walsh and firefighter Kennedy.

On Thursday evening, Mayor Walsh sent out an email blast reaffirming his thanks to municipal heroes and civil servants for putting themselves in harms way to protect everyday people like you and me on a daily basis. He also expressed his deepest condolences and sympathies to the families of Lt. Walsh and firefighter Kennedy, and urged Bostonians to aid in their relief.

“In difficult times like these, I am so proud to be mayor of a city that comes together to help our neighbors in need,” wrote Mayor Walsh in his email. “Since yesterday’s tragic events, we’ve experienced an outpouring of support from across the city, state, and country. So many people have expressed a willingness to help, in some way, as we grieve the loss of Lieutenant Walsh and Firefighter Kennedy.”

He then pointed to the Firefighters Credit Union, which created the Lieutenant Walsh – Firefighter Kennedy Memorial Fund, one of several foundations dedicated to aiding the families of fallen firefighters and those injured in the line of duty.

The flag raising and moment of silence will take place on City Hall Plaza at approximately 1:15 p.m. Friday afternoon and all are invited to attend.
