Rumors swirled that the price of avocados would be rising due to a shortage, but we were all blissfully in denial. Our beloved avocados – and, by association – guacamole, were here to stay forever. They had to be, even if we had to pay more at the grocery store or for the creamy green scoop at our favorite Mexican restaurants.

But it looks like the end has come. Boloco announced this morning that after 17 years of serving burritos topped with guacamole, they’re sad to say that, although this was a hard decision to make, they can no longer afford the avocados for their made-from-scratch guac anymore. As a result, they’ll be cutting off the sales of guacamole in all 22 of their locations, effective immediately.

And if the news couldn’t get any worse, the shortage will also be affecting Boloco’s competitors Chipotle and Qdoba. Ladies and gentlemen: It’s a full-on Guacapocalypse.

OK, OK: April Fools!

Did we prank you on behalf of Boloco? Hopefully the headline at least caused you to stress out for just a second, but don’t worry, guacamole and avocados aren’t going anywhere anytime soon. But, we have good news! For all the emotional trauma Boloco and BostInno just put you through, the local burrito chain will be giving away free scoops of guac on any burrito or burrito bowl, and chips and guac will be available for just $1 for anyone who says “Guacapocalypse” at a Boloco store. Good luck, it’s a mouthful. But just imagine your soon-to-be mouthful of (still available) guac, and it will be worth it.

That’s one great way to spend the facetious holiday if you ask me.
