Maybe one really is the loneliest number?

At least, if you’re the one dining solo at this very sad IKEA dinner table (below).

IKEA Malaysia’s April Fool’s joke – the“Lone Singleton” table – really took being single to a whole new level of sad (and narcissistic?). Single or not, we’ve all eaten by ourselves at some point. But (if I’m being honest) the idea of watching myself pile cereal into my mouth ŕ la no makeup in the morning is enough to make me lose my appetite.

When IKEA Malaysia first advertised the “Lone Singleton” dining table on their Facebook page, many believed the April Fool’s prank. Some of the shocked responses included:

“Not bad, at least I will know if there is pasta sauce on my face…”

“This advertisement is an insult to singletons. Shame on IKEA Malaysia for coming up with such an advertisement/product.”

“I hope it comes with storage space. to store that box of tissues to wipe one’s tears away as one cries alone at night.”

“This is pathetic. who would wanna buy this? Even if I’m single, I’d rather eat on the couch in front of the TV than buy this. LOL #ForeverAlone#ForeverAloneProduct#NoHope#NotForTheOptimist#GlassHalfEmpty

But one Facebook commenter said it best with 3 simples words – “sad dining table.”

Fortunately, per a later post by IKEA Malaysia’s Facebook, it does seem the Lone Singleton table was part of an April Fools prank, after all. The post claimed:

Well played, IKEA. I’m not so sure that Boston singles would really take to the IKEA Lone Singleton table, anyway. Singles in Boston seem pretty happy – and with all of the meetups, events and happenings in town, they hardly have time to eat by themselves – or with their reflection.

What do you think? Is this “table for one” a brilliant or sad April Fool’s Joke?
