[UPDATE] Not to shabby, Mr. Mayor, not too shabby at all

On Friday the Boston Red Sox will kick off the 2014 season home opener to much fanfare and celebrations. Not only will the team enjoy their World Series rings from the season prior, but Red Sox Nation will again embed themselves in storied Fenway Park after a long winter hibernation. Mayor Marty Walsh will throw out the ceremonial first pitch.

Those designated to toss the first pitch have proven the experience to be polarizing. It’s not a love-or-hate affair, but rather a funny-or-absolutely-ridiculous one. Mayor Walsh was chosen for his three months of steadfast commitment to the City of Boston, but his athletic chops have yet to be battle tested. And let’s face it, he doesn’t look like the most athletic person.

Plenty have attempted a ceremonial first pitch and plenty have failed miserably. I think it’s safe to assume that Walsh, a diehard Boston sports fan by his self-admission, can throw a baseball the regulation 60-feet from the pitcher’s mound to home plate.

But, in the equally plausible chance that he’s far to uncoordinated to handle such a monumental task. In that respect, here’s how low the bar has been set for the Mayor Walsh. Just get it near the plate, Mr. Mayor.

Former Mayor Tom Menino is also expected to make an appearance in a passing of the torch style interaction with Mayor Walsh. A first pitch veteran himself (it was lousy but the guy was 70 at the time, people), Mayor Menino is still beloved by Bostonians, both the professional athletes and regular civilians.

Check out our live stream here for a first hand account of the events happening at Fenway today. First pitch is thrown just after 2:00 p.m. so be sure to tune in.
