The socioeconomics of Massachusetts is multifaceted. That’s nothing new. The higher-ed institutions are first-rate, clean tech and green energy sectors are blossoming, and the innovation scene is renowned for cultivating successful startups. But we rarely consider what the state imports and exports to help line its pockets.

Business Insider compiled a map of the country’s major exports by state. Turns out, the commonwealth is a wheeler and dealer of gold. It’s the Bay State’s largest export and second largest import, according to U.S. Census Bureau data. The largest import? Oil.

In 2013 alone, Massachusetts shipped out over $2 billion worth of gold, and almost $1 billon increase from the year prior.

Some interesting other exports from our American brethren include diamond jewelry from New York, scarp metal from Rhode Island, radar equipment from Maryland, sodium carbonate from Wyoming and straight medicine from Delaware.

Others make more sense. If you head inland to the Midwest, you’ll see the likes of beef from Colorado, combine harvesters from Nebraska, crane parts from Wisconsin, soybean meal from South Dakota, tractors from Iowa and trucks from Missouri.

Writes Business Insider, “Some goods are very common — 12 states have airplanes and airplane components as their most valuable export. Seven states have either crude or refined oil, five have computer components, and four have gold.”

Take a look at each state listed below in alphabetical order.
