It’s spring, Boston. The weather is becoming more moderate, the Red Sox are breaking in Fenway Park and you’ve got a growing pile of crap from the winter so obstruent you can barely finagle your way in and out of your apartment. And while some, like myself admittedly, aren’t easily coaxed off the couch to help aid you in the trials and tribulations of spring cleaning, the City of Boston is.

I currently reside in the North End, so I can attest with great authority that: 1. People don’t know the proper way of discarding large, bulky items and 2. Peoples’ lack of such knowledge leads to streets filled with clutter and sheer garbage.

The City of Boston uploaded a new public service announcement video detailing the steps Bostonians should take in order to properly rid their apartments, and themselves, of undesirable refuse. So what do you do? Watch the video below, duh.

If you’re cleansing your living space of junk that won’t fit into a traditional trash can, fret not. As you’ve seen in the video, all you have to do is arrange pick up. Simply go to the Mayor’s 24 Hour Constituent Service site, drop down to the “Garbage, Recycling & Graffiti” tab and schedule your pick up.

Then, all you have to do is place the items as you would on the curb before your scheduled pick up time and voila; you’re done with spring cleaning.

The animation, done by Carly Lieberman of the City of Boston Department of Innovation & Technology, aims to get Bostonians to collectively dispose of their garbage in the proper manner while trying not to overburden those in the Public Works Department.

With the help of the New Urban Mechanics, the city released another video spotlighting a typical day as a Public Works employee. The video below sheds insight on Joanne Sullivan’s duties as a “Hokey” – a person who cleans the crevasses of the road unattainable by street sweepers.

If this video isn’t enough to motivate you to clean properly, you don’t have a pulse. They spend their entire work days not in front of a computer screen, not in a boardroom, but picking up after you.

So, as you continue to hype yourself up for what’s sure to be a weekend straightening out your apartment and pulling it from the throes of winter, be sure to do it correctly. It adds a whole new dimension of functionality and efficiency when all clocks are striking at the same second. Be sure to adhere to the city’s guidelines and you’ll be finished with your spring cleaning in no time.
