How many times have you tried to buy a replacement pair of perfectly fitting ballet flats or boyfriend jeans only to find they’re no longer available? Not just temporarily out of stock. Gone. For. Good. So was the case for New York Magazine: The Cut writer Jenni Avins and her beloved scoop-back swimsuit from J.Crew. That is, until she wrote an open letter to the brand’s creative director, Jenna Lyons, and Lyons responded – in a big way.

In her August 2013 letter to Lyons, Avins waxed rhapsodic about the “clean, open-backed one-pieces” she loved and lamented the lesser-quality knockoffs she wore in their wake. Fast-forward and the suit, looking modern and marvelous, now stars in a full-spread ad in the magazine’s print edition. Occupying the adjacent page is a scrawled note from Lyons letting Avins know that her request had been received – and realized. The moral of the story? Ask and you shall receive. Or, at the very least, it pays to have friends in high places.
