It was reported Tuesday afternoon that the artist known colloquially as Keytar Bear was allegedly attacked in two separate incidents, forcing him to take a medical leave from public performances for an undisclosed amount of time. Apparently suffering a broken nose, Keytar Bear won’t have to do much in terms of keytar playing in order to settle his growing medical bills.

Harnessing the power of the internet, one concerned Bostonian has launched an Indiegogo campaign to “not only to help out Keytar Bear with his bills, but also to show him what he means to the city of Boston.”

The crowdfunding campaign, launched on the same day Boston magazine wrote about Keytar Bear’s supposed injuries, has already garnered $1,036 of its $2,500 goal at the time this article was written.

Similarly, there will be a fundraiser event on Thursday, May 8, at Workbar Cambridge from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. to help carry the burden. The Indiegogo campaign ends the next day, May 9.

“Keytar Bear was attacked in two separate incidents on the streets of Boston,” bills the Facebook page for the Workbar Cambridge fundraiser. “Keytar Bear brings joy and happiness to Bostonians on the streets with his cheerful songs and amazing talent. As Bostonians, we are responsible for putting a smile back on his face. I’m hosting this fundraiser, not only to help out Keytar Bear with his bills, but also to show him what he means to the city of Boston.”

But Keytar Bear is hardly the kind of masquerading Ursus to roll over in the face of adversity. As he told Boston magazine:

To the people of Boston, I say this: I love you guys. I know what happened wasn’t right, and I don’t care about going broke for the next few weeks. I’d be wrong to give up on you. So as the season changes, I’ll probably be making appearances when the temps are cool.

Given that Boston is the only publication to have a direct tęte–ŕ–tęte with Keytar Bear, and that few, if any, people in Boston know the performer’s true identity, there was perviously no evidence that Keytar Bear was actually beaten up as Boston alleges. We’ve since received confirmation of the attacks. BostInno stands with Keytar Bear. One who notoriously evades the press, Keytar Bear has only confirmed his identity and the the account of the circumstances to Boston.

But given the purported yet affectionate statement he released to the City of Boston, I think it’s safe to assume he won’t just be pocketing the money and running. How well can a person move in an adult onesie anyway?
