New York, London, Milan, and Paris are known as fashion’s four capitals. But could Dubai be gunning for a spot on that list? If Karl Lagerfeld – joined by a small army of fellow high-fashion designers – has anything to say about it, the idea might be well on its way to fruition.

In partnership with Dubai-based retail distributor Chalhoub Group, the designer revealed plans to open 25 Karl Lagerfeld concept stores and shop-in-shops in the emirate by 2018, with a hefty focus on the sale of handbags. Lagerfeld is the latest big name in fashion to partner with Chalhoub Group in an effort to build retail networks in the region, following in the footsteps of Christian Dior, Marc Jacobs, and Louis Vuitton. Whether or not Dubai reaches fashion-capital status, one thing’s for certain: strappy sandals and bare legs will always be in its Fashion Week forecast.
