Easy and breathable, it’s a safe bet you’ll be living in lightweight cotton button-fronts this spring and summer. But resorting to the same solid shirts over and over again can get boring. So, if you’ve got a closet full of solids – or if you’re just looking to shake things up a bit – here are the three patterns to work into the rotation.

1. Geometric: Consider this your baby step into the world of patterns. Your best bet is to seek out a small, repeating print like dots, hexagons, or interlocking circles. The goal is a print that blends from far away. Just add chinos and loafers and you’re set for the office – or drinks at the country club.

2. Floral: Men’s florals are big right now. To ease into the look, try a print with a subtle white background. Wear it under a sport coat with jeans to keep it tame. Or go bolder and style it unbuttoned with a white tee and shorts – like a more sophisticated alternative to the Hawaiian shirt.

3. Plaid: This classic pattern is so easy to wear it might as well be a solid. For warmer months, stick to traditional tartan (rather than wintry buffalo plaid) and lighter, brighter colors. Wear it with jeans or shorts, then roll up those sleeves and do your best Mr. Rugged.

Start your stockpile. Our Men’s Cotton Shirts: What You’ll Wear All Summer Boutique opened on Thursday, May 1, at 11AM ET.
