Tuesday morning, BostInno teased a Downtown Crossing Station redesign proposal that’s currently being finalized by downtown’s Business Improvement District, with the help of Brandeis University students. Readers who didn’t see the renderings earlier, note: DTX could ultimately look like an airport terminal – a discotheque airport terminal.

There’s no ETA for an extensive DTX renovation, though BID president Rosemarie Sansone told BostInno in an earlier conversation that fives years could, theoretically, make a reasonable timetable.

The BID hopes to add a new concourse (see: the top left square in the above rendering) and address numerous station design issues. The proposal in the works wouldn’t just renovate DTX Station, it would actually make it quite a destination.

Take the “performance area” in front of the Orange Line and Macy’s for example…

Additional exhibition space and dining options would, naturally, benefit from the high volume of foot traffic passing through the station everyday.

As the T’s most central station, with an average weekday ridership of almost 24,000, DTX is itself a destination – intentionally or otherwise. With that in mind, it makes sense that the BID thinks DTX Station could serve as a mini-mall of sorts.

So, here’s what we didn’t show you earlier:

1. Architectural design plans

2. Re-configuration and physical improvements

3. A vision for DTX Station’s underutilized spaces.
