From Andy Warhol’s famous “Marilyn Diptych” to Elton John’s ballad and Seward Johnson’s larger-than-life sculpture, Marilyn Monroe has continued to inspire pop culture even decades after her 1962 death. And news today that Carine Roitfeld will base her third amfAR Cinema Against AIDS Cannes runway show on the iconic starlet’s style is affirmation that not even fashion’s uber-elite are immune to its allure.

In case your invitation hasn’t arrived yet, the amfAR benefit, considered by many to be the social highlight of the annual Cannes Film Festival, will take place on May 22. This year’s gala will include a fashion show featuring red gowns (the color is symbolic of love and the fight against AIDS) designed by some of the biggest names in the industry. Legendary French fashion editor Roitfeld, who is overseeing the runway show for the third time, has decided to dedicate the show to Monroe, who, she told WWD, “searched for love all her life.” Roitfeld speculated that Monroe would have been a big supporter of the foundation. We agree that this is one event with which she would have been proud to share the spotlight.
