Boston Mayor Marty Walsh is going to be watching the USA vs. Germany World Cup game this Thursday (12 p.m. EST) just like the rest of the city. Given both the popularity of the World Cup, and also the momentous stakes of the game (American survival in the tournament), the Boston mayor has announced that he will be hosting his own Boston World Cup watch party in City Hall Plaza (starting at 11:30 a.m.).

The US clash with Germany will be a perfect midday sports event, and should coincide with (possibly) good weather conditions which, given that this is New England, should not be taken for granted. Basically, the City Hall Plaza watch party sounds like a great World Cup setup, with lots of potential, similar in that respect to the American team in Brazil.

Here’s a tweet announcing the Walsh watch party from his Chief of Staff, Dan Koh:

The watch party is in conjunction with the New England Revolution, who will have Slyde (their mascot), the Revs Girls and their street team, the Battalion, on hand for some giveaways and to get the crowd going (though they may not need it if Dempsey scores in the first minute again). Fingers crossed.

The American chances against the Germans are actually fairly decent. Though the German team is returning to full strength after some pre-tournament injuries, they will still be using players (like midfielder Sami Khedira) who are not quite at full strength. And keep in mind that the US were able to defeat Ghana 2-1 in a truly lackluster performance, while Germany could only manage a 2-2 draw against the African side.

Here are all of the possible scenarios, and what they would mean for the United States. Study this, and then check out the Mayor’s watch party.
