Boston’s restaurant scene has caught fire this year, and it’s shown no signs of stopping. Halfway through a year of exciting restaurant openings of all kinds, one world-renowned chef will be picking up a dropped project and opening a new venture in Boston. After nearly two years of rumors, Mario Batali has committed to bringing Babbo Pizzeria, a wood-fired pizza and pasta restaurant, to Fan Pier.

Back in November of 2012, Batali tweeted his excitement that a new outpost of his was headed to Boston, adding to his international chain of Italian restaurants. The venture, an offshoot of his OTTO Enoteca Pizzeria chain titled Babbo, was predicted to open in the Fort Point neighborhood, but after a series of snags, the project failed to come to fruition. Last August, Batali tweeted that his Boston opening was “not looking good,” and an official statement was made relaying that Batali was still searching for the “perfect location.” A little less than a year later, he appears to have found it.

According to the Boston Globe, the city’s revived Babbo Pizzeria will be an 8,700 square foot wood-fired pizza and pasta restaurant, with three separate bars serving cocktail, pizza and antipasti, as well as a patio and a room for private parties. The space is headed to Eleven Fan Pier Boulevard in the Innovation District, on the first floor of a building otherwise occupied by businesses. Construction will begin this summer, with Babbo’s opening slated for the end of the year.

Batali’s also been searching for a location in Boston to open his Italian superstore, Eataly, but that project is still in the works. In the meantime, until he finds his second perfect location, we’ll just have to keep our sights set on Babbo.
