Mocospace and Android
Mocospace puts the focus on their Android app during the launch

Are you on MocoSpace? It’s the first and largest social networking site on the mobile web. MocoSpace isn’t exclusive to those with smartphones; as a MocoSpace user you can share videos, photos and music, and chat with friends on your cellphone’s mobile web. With smartphones taking over the cellphone market, MocoSpace released their first Android and iPhone applications in a soft launch last week and made the official announcement on May 20th.

Though MocoSpace’s iPhone and Android apps were released simultaneously, the iPhone app wasn’t mentioned, which leads us to believe the majority of MocoSpace’s smartphone users are on Android devices.

Both the Android and the iPhone MocoSpace apps will let users interact with others who are live on the application or mobile web. Users will also be able to upload photos, view people’s profiles, comment, and receive message notifications. While it sounds simple, the message that MocoSpace sent by focusing on the Android app instead of the iPhone was loud and clear.

The iPhone is losing it’s cool.

Mocospace’s core demographic are Latinos and African-American, who are early adopters and leaders in cultural trendsthink Snoop Dog and Tommy Hilfiger, Eminem, and Nike’s Air Force 1 sneaker. Latinos and African-Americans who make up much of the United State’s urban youth set trends, and they’re major contributors to the success of the Android. CEO of MocoSpace, Justin Siegel, told Xconomy’s Wade Roush recently that “we’ve seen a tremendous amount of growth in our base of Android users.”

Suburban youth have looked to their urban peers for fashion and music trends for decades; technology is next. Marketers spend millions of dollars trying to predict what will be cool, but with MocoSpace’s insight on their growing Android base, Android could be the next Nike Air Force 1 — the next hot trend.

Was MocoSpace’s choice to focus on their Android launch a smart one? Are racial demographics important in predicting mobile trends?
