It appears this morning that SCVNGR has finally gotten over Justin Beiber and is back to sending out rich releases. According to a press release sent to BostInno over the weekend, SCVNGR has created a new interactive location-based game for C’s fans, The Boston Celtics Trek.

The trek which starts today will run from October 4th through October 22nd, and takes place at dozens of locations in Boston, from Logan Airport to Modell’s stores and of course to the famous Red Auerbach statue. The special trek will reward fans who complete challenges at the locations above with points. Points will accumulate and the person with the most points at the end of the trek (Oct. 22nd) will win season tickets for this upcoming 2010-2011 season. Other prizes include an 18 person group suite night, free Celts gear, discounts at Modell’s stores and other Celts-themed prizes.

This is not SCVNGR’s first sports related trek. Back in July they developed one for the Patriots to help Vince find his lost Superbowl ring. After speaking with a Patriots rep, it appears Vince’s ring is still out there, and the custom trek was not a huge hit with Pats fans. Hopefully, The Boston Celtics Trek will be a great success as one of Highland Capital Partners (investor in SCVNGR) advisors is Wyc Grousbeck, CEO and co-owner of the C’s.

Either way this is probably your best shot of winning Celt’s season tickets.

“Bostonians love the Celtics,” said Chris Mahl, SCVNGR SVP and Chief Brand Alchemist. “We are excited to be able to bring that love right to their mobile phones wherever they go. Now Celtics fans can actually play a game with the Celtics at some of the most famous spots in the city. This is incredibly engaging content for us to add to our game layer, and to see the Celtics reaching out to their fan base through SCVNGR is awesome.”

Here’s how The Celtics Trek works:

  • Download the SCVNGR app
  • Open it up wherever you go in Boston and tap the special Celtics trek tab and head to the locations listed
  • Complete the challenges at those places to earn points. For example, checking in gets you 1 point. Solve the jersey number puzzle at South Station or tell us the best place to watch a Celts game at Fanueil Hall and get 2 more.
  • Points will be tallied up in a secret SCVNGR-Celtics Calculator Basement Room (what?)
  • The top point-earners will earn special Celtics prizes.

Custom treks are a HUGE money maker for SCVNGR. They have partnered with over 600 institutions so far, including universities, museums, and retail stores. Their biggest appears to be with US Army, which is rumored to have cost around $250,000 for a single custom trek.
