According to a press release sent to BostInno this morning, Cambridge Mass-based Backupify – the leading provider of online backup, archiving and export services for cloud-based data – has acquired Tweetbackup. Tweetbackup is a popular Twitter backup service that currently backups over 62 million Tweets a day. In addition Tweetbackup also archives ‘follower’ and ‘following’ lists, hashtags, and even Twitpic photos.

“TweetBackup is one of the most popular Twitter backup services on the market,” said Backupify CEO, Rob May. “Now part of Backupify, TweetBackup adds to our broad spectrum of cloud services, including Google Apps, Facebook, Flickr and Gmail. Backupify now has over 100,000 users that are using cloud services with greater confidence, knowing that their online data is secure and in their control.”

Backupify‘s product offering already includes the ability to backup services like Basecamp, Facebook, Flickr, Gmail, Google Apps, Hotmail, Twitter, WordPress and more. With this new acquisition and the announcement of Facebook fan page backup last week, Backupify is solidifying itself as the leader in social media backup. Today over 100,000 users trust Backupify to protect 188 million emails, 54 million images and 113 million tweets.

TweetBackup will remain a stand-alone service, but current users will now have access to Backupify’s customer service and their complete host of products.

Backupify was co-founded in 2008 in Louisville, KY, by Rob May and Vik Chadha, with HubSpot founder Dharmesh Shah as a critical investor and advisor. After raising a million in seed funding from various investors in late 2009 and early 2010 and building their Google Apps integration, Backupify landed $4.5 million Series A led by Avalon Ventures and General Catalyst Partners this September.
