Granted I’m from Maine, but there’s really nothing like the smell of fresh evergreen and balsam during the holidays.

Unfortunately living here in downtown Boston has made getting this holiday fix not-so-convenient. There’s buying an artificial tree and lots of Yankee Candles, hauling a mini tree from the backyard 5 hours to Boston, or convincing that one friend with a truck to help trek a tree from the lot at Blanchard’s down Comm. Ave. So when I was tipped off about City-Trees.com, a tree delivery service that just launched for Boston, I got pretty excited here in the newsroom.

City-Trees.com is Boston’s first tree delivery service. $40 will get you a 4-5′ apartment-sized tree delivered right to your doorstep, with $1 going to the American Forests Charity (they offer larger sizes, too). And if you’re like me, you might also need to purchase a stand and take advantage of the $10 service fee they offer to set that tree up for you when it’s delivered.

The trees are raised on family-owned Piper Hill Tree Farm in New Hampshire, right near where founder Steve Mahoney grew up. “We hand select the trees each season for the lots and this year I was able to select the trees and harvest them myself,” he said. The idea came about when he was actually selling trees on open lots, lots that required a person to be present every day. And after living in Boston and seeing successful delivery services for everything from laundry to groceries, he thought it would be a great idea.

“I really enjoy selling Christmas trees,” Mahoney said. “I love talking to customers about the farm and the process it takes to get a tree from planting to their living room. I take pride in providing a great product, and now, with a convenient delivery service.” In Mahoney’s first year of City-Trees.com, you can expect his smiling face with delivery of your perfect tree.

Mahoney is a recent UNH grad and Boston area entrepreneur who runs MyBike Media. We asked Mahoney about how he keeps the tree costs so low, and he broke it down for us on four fronts: “1) Getting my trees directly from a friends farm – most lots buy trees from Canada, pay more and don’t know how their trees were grown. 2) Doing all the work myself. 3) I try to schedule deliveries to the same neighborhoods on the same day if possible to cut down on gas costs. 4) No office or lot space costs.”

City-Trees.com starts delivering the day after Thanksgiving, and if you order your tree before Turkey Day, you can receive a 10 percent discount (just enter the code THX at checkout). Mahoney delivers to just about all of Metro Boston, including Arlington, Belmont, Boston, Brookline, Cambridge, Chelsea, Everett, Malden, Medford, Needham, Newton, Revere, Somerville and Watertown. And if your city or town isn’t included, just let Mahoney know and he can probably make it happen!
