We have written about some of Boston’s mobile heavy hitters before on top of tons of apps that have been built in the greater Boston area. So today we wanted to highlight a handful of the mobile dev shops here, and who by all accounts are growing like a weed with demand for apps across iPhone, Android, iPad and other platforms growing. Apperian, backed by Common Angels, boasts an impressive portfolio of apps. The company has built apps for industries across the gamut, including automotive (Cadillac), services (Progressive, FICO), retail (Rue La La, Timberland), media (Newsday, Universal Music Group), games (RampChamp, Light Riders 3D), and others. Raizlabs
Brookline-based Raizlabs has helped launch over 35 apps for the iPad, iPhone and Android platforms. Notable Raizlabs client’s apps include many in the Boston area, like Rue La La’s Android app, RunKeeper’s initial iPhone and Android apps, as well as MIT’s iPhone app.
Raizlabs has developed several of its own apps. These include Ploid (the first four player multitouch tabletop game for the iPad), the drawing and notetaking app SketchPad HD, a Clock Radio app with over 25,000 stations, an app for Mother Goose Nursery Rhymes, a Tip Calculator app, and a Mortgage Calculator app, and several others you can check out here.

Rocket Farm Studios
Cambridge-based Rocket Farm Studios specializes in iPhone, iPad and Android applications. The creative firm refers to the apps it designs and develops as a Mission, each requiring “sound strategy, creative thinking and flight ready engineering.”
Rocket Farm has created Poem Flow (a unique, interactive poetry app built in collaboration with the American Academy of Poets and TextTelevision), Jumbli (a Scrabble-meets-pinball word game built in partnership with Boston-based place-based social media firm LocaModa), and the someecards iPhone app (an app for this humor site with a top-50 Twitter following, and which recently won the O’Reilly App Smackdown for best e-card app).

Sparkfish Creative
Cambridge-based Sparkfish Creative is best known by Bostonians for building the MassTransit iPhone app for the MBTA.
MassTransit provides commuters with quick access to all of Boston’s bus, commuter rail, and ferry schedules. While the firm says most of their time is spent on this flagship app, they also provide private consulting and contract work when contacted.

TwoSixtyTwo
TwoSixtyTwo, led by a Berklee College of Music graduate Brian Schachter, specializes in building music apps.
In March this year he released Interval Ear Training app, which helps users learn musical intervals by ear, and a few months later released Melody Ear Training, which helps users develop a better musical ear. Beatbox Pad is a drum beat app, with 28 different sounds. More recently, TwoSixtyTwo released their Blues Guitar app that lets users play all the notes in the blues scale.
