“Some agencies cast bigger shadows than others.” This is the tagline of MediaPost‘s OMMA Magazine’s 2010 Agency of the Year Awards announced today. The magazine is the only trade publication that focuses on online media, marketing and advertising — and Boston-based agencies took home a quarter of this year’s awards.

SapientNitro (@SapientNitro on Twitter) took home the Silver award for Agency of the Year, and Mullen (@mullenunbound on Twitter) took home a Bronze award for Best Media Planning and Buying Agency. These Boston-based agencies represented best in class excellence in the online advertising community — make sure to congratulate them!

We spoke with Mullen’s Chief Media Officer, John Moore, about what has set Mullen apart in 2010, as well as Boston’s role in the future of marketing.

According to Moore, the big change in 2010 has been that consumers are not chasing marketers; marketers are chasing consumers. “Our buying into this vision of change is why we were named Best Media Planning & Buying Agency of the Year,” Moore stated. “We have been incredibly tremendous in pushing our clients to change from the status quo, and fortunate enough to have clients who embrace change. When people refer to what Zappos, Olympus and JetBlue have done, it’s all been around our philosophy of understanding that consumers are changing so you need to change the way you market to them.”

With regard to Boston specifically as the new marketing stronghold,  Moore added,

“Boston has always been called The Athens of America. We have great digital agencies, Mullen being one, and are able to draft off all the top colleges here. A lot of digital talent is already out there in Boston, and because of that we have tremendous depth in our organization in the digital arena. The great thing for us is that we don’t ever need to leave Boston.”
