Today Advertising Age, the advertising industry’s leading media outlet, announced their annual Agency A-List and three Boston companies were included in the mix.

Mullen

Mullen was honored as the #3 agency on the list, citing the company’s 24 percent increase in revenue and the hiring of an additional 187 people (recession, what?). Mullen recently moved its headquarters from their Wenham, Mass. campus right to downtown Boston. The company cites the move as dramatically helping take their business to the next level in terms of attracting talent as well as fostering a more innovative environment.

Mullen garnered a lot of notoriety when they landed the Zappos.com account in 2009, and winning the JetBlue account more recently has continued to solidify the company as a top agency across the globe. Other clients of note include Tresemme, Century 21 and Foxwoods.

Arnold Worldwide

Arnold was named the “Comeback Agency of the Year” after losing clients laxoSmithKline, RadioShack, and Citizens Bank in 2009. It kicked off 2010 adding 18 clients, according to AdAge ($700 million worth). Arnold’s new CEO, Andrew Benett, had much to do with the comeback according to AdAge. “Borrowing from the management-consulting world, which establishes centers of excellence by competency, he etched out a plan for each office. Arnold’s Boston headquarters is now the hub for big retail accounts such as McDonald’s, Pearl Vision and CVS, and for financial services, including Fidelity and Progressive.” This year Arnold won the CVS account, and has also been behind Hersheys and Carnival campaigns. More locally in addition to Fidelity, Arnold is behind Ocean Spray and New Balance campaigns.

SapientNitro

Aside from the ten agencies that made the A-List, AdAge also highlighted “10 Hot Shops” who delivered some of the best work of the year to top brands. Boston-based SapientNitro was #9 on this “Agency A-List Standouts” list. A year and a half ago, Sapient merged with creative agency Nitro, and the brand is now ringing strong. Expect more from this company in the Asia Pacific, where 65 percent of its staff is located. The company posted $500M in revenue, landing clients like Chrysler, Coca-Cola’s 2012 Olympics, and Healthy Choice. SapientNitro is also behind Cambridge-based Constant Contact’s campaigns this year.

Make sure you congratulate these Boston companies!
