Tonight kicks off the first round of the Beanpot, Boston’s collegiate ice hockey tournament held annually since 1952 that pits Northeastern University, Harvard University, Boston College, and Boston University against one another. Thanks to social media, athletic departments can now reach hundreds of thousands of fans and alums with pre game, game, and post game buzz and updates. While we didn’t want to get into winner predictions or which university’s fans are best (we have BC and Northeastern represented here on the BostInno squad), we did want to see how these four university’s athletic departments matched up on social media. Without further ado, here is the Beanpot Social Media Bracket:

Judging by social media reach, Harvard should take home tonight’s big W in the Harvard vs. Northeastern game. Harvard’s athletic department trumps Northeastern on both the Twitter and Facebook front. Moving on to game 2 tonight between BC and BU, we have a closer social media reach battle. While BU has a thousand more Twitter followers, BC’s superfans pull through and smoke BU (and every other University) on their Facebook reach with over 6,500 fans. And while the final championship game isn’t until February 14th, if Harvard and BC went head to head on social media reach today, BC would take home the Beanpot title, thanks again to their Facebook presence as Harvard trumps them on Twitter.

We also looked at each university’s YouTube presence in terms of total views and subscribers. Unfortunately, Northeastern and Boston College only have bulk YouTube channels, instead of ones just for athletics. While both BC vs. BU and Harvard vs. Northeastern are competitive separately on the video front, Harvard really takes home the win here in terms of total views of athletic video content.
