The beginning of March Bloomberg’s BusinessWeek released its annual ranking of the top undergraduate business schools. Hot off the press today, U.S. News & World Report has released its annual ranking of the top graduate business schools for 2012. As usual and as expected, Boston area schools dominated.

U.S. News prefaced its business school rankings this year by sharing how widespread and significant changes are across schools nationwide when it comes to technology and curriculum innovation at the MBA level. So, make sure you congratulate these business school programs here in Boston for leading the way!

For overall graduate business school rankings, here is how Boston-area schools stacked up among the top 100 MBA programs:

  • #2 Harvard University
  • #3 Massachusetts Institute of Technology
  • #7 Dartmouth
  • #34 Boston College and Boston University (tied)
  • #52 Babson College
  • #56 Northeastern University
  • #60 UMass Amherst
  • #73 Bentley University
  • #85 Worcester Polytechnic Institute

The main change in rankings from last year to this year when it comes to Boston area schools: Stanford had tied with Harvard for #1 for the past 3 years, but Stanford took #1 as Harvard’s overall score actually slipped a bit this year. MIT remained #3, but this year is tied with Wharton who moved up from the #5 spot last year.

U.S. News also broke down the top 10 schools in various specialty business disciplines from accounting to operations. Three Boston area schools shined in their specialization when it comes to savvy graduates in entrepreneurship, information systems and marketing:

  • Entreprneurship: Babson College is ranked #1 for the 18th consecutive year in a row and MIT comes in close behind at #3.
  • Information Systems: Not surprisingly, MIT is ranked #1 for anyone looking to go into programming and information system management.
  • Marketing: Harvard University is flagged as the #5 top business school for those looking to specialize in marketing.
