Paltalk, a leading real-time, video-based community with over 70 million downloads, just released a new release of its iPhone app, Vumber Mobile – which now boasts unlimited calling and texting across carriers.

Vumber Mobile works on iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad and allows users to place calls to other iOS devices over Wi-Fi or their mobile data networks, even adding multiple lines. The company’s announcement of this new unlimited, cross-network calling and texting worldwide is earning it plenty more interest from iPhone users. Android or tablet user? Don’t worry: the company says Vumber will be available to download for you later this Spring.

Like many free group texting and mobile social networking apps, Vumber provides users disposable phone numbers – even several per account — that allow you to make calls, send texts and network without giving up your real phone number. Vumber also lets you browse and connect on its social networking community of over 3 million members from within the iPhone app. Like AOL Instant Messenger and Boston-based mobile social network MocoSpace, on Vumber you can keep a friend list and discover other people using the app too. The difference is this app focuses heavily on calling and texting: check out all the features, from caller ID to VumberMail, here on their feature list page.

Vumber’s pricing as currently listed on their website:

  • Basic at $9.95/month: nationwide calling, 1 phone number, 1,200 minutes (Skype, unlimited calls nationwide and to Canada is $2.99/month)
  • World at $19.95/month: calls to 39 countries, 1 phone number, calling to cellphones and landlines, 1,200 minutes (Skype, unlimited calls worldwide to 40 countries, is $13.99/month)
  • Business at $29.95/month: 4 phone numbers, nationwide calling, 2,000 minutes

The last time Paltalk got this much media attention was in July 2009, when the startup bought back its shares from Boston-based VC firm SoftBank at a premium. Paltalk, founded in 1998, sold 20% of its equity to SoftBank for $6 million in 2004. Before that, the company was in the news for winning a patent lawsuit with Microsoft in 2004 around certain components of Xbox Live.

“Users are becoming increasingly more dependent on text and IM chat to stay in touch versus the traditional phone call. At Paltalk, we want to continuously develop innovative ways for consumers to share information quickly and efficiently while simultaneously keeping the cost as low as possible,” said Jason Katz, CEO, Paltalk last week.

Vumber Mobile is an extension of Paltalk’s popular desktop web video chat software offers free video chat, instant messaging and chat rooms. The company’s suite of products include video chat widgets, embeddable chat rooms, Paltalk Express (Paltalk chat rooms for Mac), and Paltalk Mobile, and now Vumber.
