5 Best ‘Awkward Family Photos’ from March

AwkwardFamilyPhotos.com was started by two childhood friends in 2009 when they remarked over lunch how “universally awkward” families are. (To the left is the photo that started it all.) And it is on this crutch that every day its creators post a hilarious photo — many of which are user submitted — embracing the mantra. One of the brothers was quoted when the viral hit first made national news,

“There is something kind of cathartic for people about sharing the oddness of their families. And that’s what we hope the site will be — a communal celebration of awkwardness.”

Almost two years later, the site — known more fondly by devout readers as AFP — still entertains hundreds of thousands of people every month across the globe. Its founders were down at SXSW this month and revealed AFP — nearly unchanged in design and feel since launch — is about to move beyond its website, into greeting cards, books and perhaps even some commercial television time.

The brand has breached out into other themed properties like AwkwardFamilyPetPhotos.com (a hardcover book will hit shelves this November with some of the best) and has Hall of Fames on each. Their Twitter handle, @awkwardfamily, has attracted over 22,000 followers.
