Defined by innovation and an undercurrent of rich history, from our leading companies and cutting edge startups to our government and top tier colleges, Boston inspires. This photo series aims to capture it. Enjoy!

Today’s photo comes from the folks at the Mass Governor’s Office and the Venture Development Center at UMass Boston, a bustling incubator for tech and life sciences companies. The VDC played host to Governor Deval Patrick yesterday, who spent a solid hour in a roundtable discussion with leaders at the companies incubating in the VDC. Pictured on the right is Richard Andersen, the founder of Symmetric Computing, who we had the pleasure of interviewing a few months back to learn about their mission (and technology) to bring super computers to the masses.

Deval Patrick is completely wide-eyed with awe at the super computer being shown to him. According to William Brah who runs the VDC, Patrick remarked, “I’m dazzled” when speaking to Symmetric Computing’s work and the super computer at hand.

Patrick also called the startups housed at the VDC “some of our most promising emerging technology and life sciences companies.” Brah shared with BostInno,

“Giving meaning to his words, [Governor Deval Patrick] tasked Housing and Economic Development Secretary Greg Bialecki to put one of the startups, Symmetric Computing, in touch with the director of the Green High Performance Computing Center under construction in Holyoke.”

According to Patrick, this Green High Performance Computing Center is going to be “the fastest computing system east of the Mississippi.” And Symmetric Computing’s technology will play a big role in it.
