Cloud-based multimedia creation, sharing and tracking company Brainshark tells us it plans to be over 200 employees strong by the end of this year. The focus of this growth? First and foremost: Mobile, in particular iPads and other tablets being adopted by businesses more and more every day. On top of this, by end of year, expect Brainshark to start executing on their bigger vision — that being to take a more prominent role on the social for business front.

And just this morning the Waltham-based company announced a big partnership with Blackboard, one of the leading educational technology platforms in the country adopted by many schools here in the Hub like Babson. Brainshark will enable Blackboard users to easily create elearning content like presentations on the fly, making them viewable on devices like ever increasingly adopted smartphones and tablets.

Brainshark and its web-based communications platform has been enjoying a compound annual growth rate of 30% over the last five years. Their technology has always focused on providing value to businesses, making it easy for employees to create, share and track interactive presentations with pre-recorded audio (be it slides, documents, videos, or otherwise). After creating these presentations, they can then distribute and track how it is viewed on-demand by others.

One customer segment the technology has proved wildly attractive for has been sales teams. And with new updates to the company’s mobile app last week, the popularity doesn’t seem to be going anywhere but up.

“With companies buying up tons and tons of tablets for sales, we’re looking to provide the means to actually utilize them,” explained Gerald Praysman, marketer at Brainshark. “With the Brainshark app, salespeople can get immediate product updates and messaging as well as the ability to directly show prospects product information.”

The company’s iOS app (works with iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad) boasts a Flash-based mobile player; you can even play PowerPoint and other Microsoft Office software right on your Apple device. Last week the company released other new mobile features, including enhanced mobile reporting (allows you to see what slides/content was clicked on and viewed – things like for how long and in what order), polling capabilities, and integration with learning management systems.

Android user? No worries. Brainshark says Android is coming this quarter, too.

On top of mobile and tablet, Brainshark is focusing on its professional services division and myBrainshark – the company’s freemium product. With its professional services division, Brainshark creates high-quality presentation content for businesses that don’t have the resources or time to do so themselves. With myBrainshark, while the company says while there are many use cases, VC pitching is one area it believes its platform can add value. Entrepreneurs can upload a video of themselves or a quick powerpoint presentation on their business plan, attaching the document to the player.

“It adds a lot more pop to a VC pitch than just the regular run-of-the-mill business plan in a binder,” explained Prayson. They get to see a little more of the entrepreneur which is such a crucial part of making investment decisions.”

As far as where the company hopes to be by the end of 2011, Brainshark plans to start executing on its larger vision. Prayson shared with BostInno:

“We’re really looking to build some mindshare around our social capabilities. myBrainshark is a real rival in the documents, content and video sections of the social media spectrum. We pride ourselves on being a really intuitive and highly-functional tool, especially for businesses. We’re carving out a really interesting niche in the ‘social for business’ space and will be looking to make developments here as we move forward.”

With a collective 10 million views and 107 million minutes of content on the Brainshark platform in 2010 (that’s 205 years worth of content consumed), we look forward to following their moves more in 2011.
