Aspen Technology

Burlington based Aspen Technology, Inc. (NASDAQ: AZPN), a leading provider of software and services to the process industries, has appointed Robert M. Whelan, Jr. to the company’s board of directors. From the release:

“Whelan brings an extensive background of technology investment banking and executive management to AspenTech’s board. Since 2001, he has been President of Whelan & Company, LLC, providing business and financial consulting and strategic services to a broad range of companies. From 2001 to 2005, he served as Managing Director of the consulting firm Valuation Perspectives, Inc. Previously, Whelan held a number of senior-level positions at leading investment banking and brokerage firms. He was Vice Chairman of Prudential Volpe Technology Group, the technology investment banking and research division of Prudential Securities. Prior to Prudential Volpe, he was Chief Operating Officer, Managing Director, board member and Head of Investment Banking of Volpe Brown Whelan & Company, a private technology and healthcare investment banking, brokerage and asset management firm acquired by Prudential Securities in late 1999.”

Harvard University

Cambridge based collegiate innovation house Harvard University has appointed a new director of its endowment, John Devir. From the announcement:

“Harvard University, the world’s richest school, hired John Devir as managing director in charge of stocks in developed markets, the third executive added this year as the endowment expands its internal investment staff. Devir, 40, will join Harvard Management Co. in July from Barclays Capital Inc. in New York, where he was managing director and head of equity strategies, the Cambridge, Mass., school said yesterday in an e-mailed statement.”

Konarka

Lowell based Konarka, an innovator in development and commercialization a material that converts light to electricity (Power Plastic), has appointed Dr. James R. Buntaine as executive vice president and Chief Technology Officer. From the release:

“Reporting directly to Howard Berke, chairman, CEO and co-founder of Konarka, Jim will lead the company’s technology creation and product development team. He joins Konarka after more than 30 years of successful technical leadership at Eastman Kodak Company. … Jim joined Eastman Kodak in 1980 in the Solid State Chemistry Laboratory. After holding many leadership positions within Kodak, he moved to the Display and Components Business Unit as technology director in 2004 where he repurposed Kodak’s coating machines for non-photographic applications. From 2007-2009, he served as CTO of Kodak’s OLED Systems Business, ultimately leading to the OLED Business sale to the LG Group. Most recently, he was CTO of the Graphics Prepress and Packaging Business responsible for new technology creation, commercialization and external technology collaborations. He also developed an extensive IP portfolio while at Kodak.”

NaviNet

Boston based NaviNet, America’s largest real-time healthcare communications network, has appointed two senior executives: S. Michael Ross, M.D., MHA, joins as chief medical officer and David Kates joins as senior vice president of Product Management and Clinical Strategy. From the release:

“Prior to joining NaviNet, Ross served as chief medical officer and senior vice president of Business Development at Prematics, a leading provider of mobile care management solutions, which was acquired by NaviNet in 2010. In this role, Ross was responsible for helping health plan customers efficiently leverage the e-prescribing platform to improve communications with providers and members. Ross previously served as vice president of Healthcare at Varolii Corporation, vice president of Strategic Business at the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia and as chief executive officer of Advanced Concepts Institute, a USP research group focused on the adoption of health information technology and its impact. … Prior to joining NaviNet, Kates served as the senior vice president of Business and Product Strategy at Prematics. Kates previously held senior level management positions at Hx Technologies and WebMD, now Sage Software. Kates currently serves as co-chair for the Certification Commission for Health Information Technology (CCHIT), is a member of the Health Information Technology Standards Panel (HITSP) and is a past board member of HL7. He has served in leadership positions within the Health Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS), American Health Information Community (AHIC) and the national eHealth Initiative.”

Yankee Group

Cambridge based Yankee Group, a leading technology market research firm, has appointed Jaime Ellertson to its Board of Directors. From the release:

“Ellertson is CEO and founder of Cloudfloor, a startup serving the emerging enterprise cloud computing market. … Ellertson’s track record in building and nurturing successful technology businesses is unprecedented. Prior to Cloudfloor, he was CEO of Internet performance management provider Gomez, which he led through an IPO that resulted in its sale to Compuware (NASDAQ: CPWR) in 2009. Prior to Gomez, he served as CEO, president and a director of S1 (NASDAQ: SONE), a software provider to the financial services marketplace. As CEO and chairman of the board of Interleaf, he orchestrated the highly successful turnaround of the company and saw its public market capitalization increase over 7,000 percent, culminating in its acquisition by BroadVision (NASDAQ: BVSN) in 2000.”
