AlwaysOn, a self-described “leading business media brand networking global Silicon Valley,” releases annual lists on the top 100 media companies and top 100 venture capitalists. And for the first time ever this year to keep pace with and reaction to the growth in mobile, the OnMobile Top 100.

The AlwaysOn editorial team, a team of partners, and industry experts worked to identify the top 100 private companies that are “pushing aggressively into the mobile space and turning the old smartphone into a must-have connected device as well as creating solutions that will open up the industry and lead to huge value-creation opportunities.” Companies were selected based on five criteria: innovation, market potential, commercialization, stakeholder value, and media buzz.

The list itself is broken down into nine categories: advertising, cloud services, commerce, consumer and social networking, devices, enabling technologies, enterprise applications, games and entertainment, and marketing and sales. Three Massachusetts based companies were honored, including Jumptap and Nexage for their mobile advertising solutions and Apperian for their enterprise mobile application platform.

“The mobile market is booming, as evidenced by top researchers, who are predicting that more smartphones will be shipped in 2012 than PCs, and there will be more mobile Internet users than PC Internet users by 2014,” explained Tony Perkins, founder and editor of AlwaysOn. “This explosive market is being driven by the companies that made this year’s OnMobile Top 100 list.”

You can view the full list of 100 companies plus a set of up-and-comers who are “ones to watch” here in the AlwaysOn announcement.

Curious about where Mass. stands in other AlwaysOn annual lists? Five Boston area companies made the OnMedia Top 100 announced in January, and nineteen Boston area VCs made last years AlwaysOn Top 100 VCs announced in November.

Congratulations to these teams and technologies for the honor!
