Today Cambridge based cloud backup provider, Backupify, issued a press release detailing several government agencies who recently adopted their service, including NASA, the Department of Energy and the National Archives.

You may recall from our coverage of WikiLeaks that Backupify was the one and only Twitter account that had the power to Direct Message the WikiLeaks Twitter handle. (In order for Backupify to backup tweets you must follow the company on Twitter.) This certainly helped drive visibility and garner attention from government agencies. However, these latest customers are more likely a result of the company’s solution (they increased their user base by 400% in 2010), which is certainly filling a gaping need on the social media backup front. Backupify continues to add features to its base product to become even more valuable, most recently releasing the ability to search backed up data easily.

From Kenneth Cole to the Red Cross debacle, companies and government agencies alike have voiced concerns around risks associated with social media, mainly those of data loss and the need to comply with audit and other requirements. Some even require those handling their Twitter accounts to manually log each and every tweet sent and received. Backupify of course does all of this automatically for Twitter, LinkedIn and Facebook data (along with Google Apps).

“Social media has become an essential tool to communicate openly with constituents. Unfortunately, there was no easy way to retain online information that may have been lost or deleted,” said Kevon K. Hayes, Web Developer and Administrator for the City of Rockford, Illinois — one of Backupify’s latest customers. “That’s when we found Backupify. Backupify gives us the peace of mind we needed to engage with our community online. There is really no other solution on the market that provides the functionality of Backupify to help take the stress out of using social media for government purposes.”

Here are the latest government groups to adopt Backupify:

  • NASA
  • The National Archives
  • U.S. Department of Energy
  • City of Tempe, AZ
  • Iowa Finance Authority
  • Lake County, IL
  • State of Nebraska
  • Louisiana Economic Development
  • City of Rockford, Illinois
  • Marion County, Florida
  • City of Springfield, Missouri
  • City of Rochester, Minnesota

The company has released a white paper to go along with the release, “Everything You Need to Know About Government Social Media (But Were Afraid to Ask).
