In January we wrote about how Cambridge based mobile ad targeting company Jumptap was serious about its intellectual property, locking down several more patents. These patents cover how targeted advertising is deployed on mobile devices (including tablets), powered by data like demographics, location, context, behavior and even transaction information.

Yesterday Jumptap was awarded its 14th patent, #7,970,389, for “Presentation of sponsored content based on mobile transaction event.” It relates to a computer driven method of positioning targeted sponsored content, including receiving data, selecting relevant ads based on that data, and presenting said selected ad content on any “mobile communication facility.” Here are the exact steps in the method as outlined by Jumptap:

  • Receiving data corresponding to a transaction event having occurred via the interaction of a user with the mobile communication facility, wherein the transaction event includes transmission of data representative of a first product or a first service being purchased by the user;
  • Selecting advertising content based at least upon a relevance between an advertisement for a second product or a second service and the purchased first product or first service in the transaction event, wherein the relevance is further based on information relating to compatibility of the advertising content, second product, or second service with the mobile communication facility; and
  • Presenting the selected advertising content on a display of the mobile communication facility.

The patent was filed in April 2010 by inventors Jorey Ramer, Adam Soroca, and Dennis Doughty.

“As mobile advertising becomes more driven by technology and marketers seek more effective targeting, Jumptap is uniquely positioned to deliver the most effective methods of reaching key audiences,” said George Bell, CEO of Jumptap. “Jumptap’s impressive roster of 14 patents demonstrates our commitment to technological leadership, and has been an integral aspect of our dynamic growth. We look forward to continue driving innovation and engagement.”

You can learn about each of Jumptap’s patents right on its website, where it lets the world know it plans to defend this intellectual property. The company has doubled the size of its patent portfolio in the last year, and says it expects to lock down more this year (they have submitted over 70 patent applications to date).

Jumptap was just honored in AlwaysOn’s OnMobile Top 100 Winners, coming off from officially closing a $25M financing round in mid-May.
